During a recent interview, Elden Ring director Hidetaka Miyazaki revealed that he has been drawing inspiration from specific multiplayer games. While FromSoftware's catalog has always featured online elements, Elden Ring's multiplayer functionality stands out from contemporary multiplayer experiences.
Although most players will likely journey through Elden Ring alone, the game's cooperative system allows for friends to join in on the adventure. While not seamless, the online aspect of Elden Ring still allows players to team up and take on challenges together. Invasions, a hallmark of FromSoftware's game design, have also returned in Elden Ring, making the multiplayer experience unique. While solo players will only be invaded by NPCs or after using a certain item, invasions primarily serve to balance cooperative play, as having two players makes bosses significantly easier.
Fans, both old and new, have been curious about the inspirations behind Elden Ring's development. In a recent interview with IGN following the 26th annual DICE Awards, director Hidetaka Miyazaki shed some light on his interests in multiplayer titles. When asked about the appeal of current multiplayer games, Miyazaki mentioned the ongoing updates in technology and game design. He cited Escape From Tarkov as a recent example that had piqued his interest. Miyazaki is paying attention to how players are incorporated into gameplay as a resource as the industry continues to evolve.
Elden Ring has not faced as severe of a cheating problem as Escape From Tarkov, but AFK farmers have been an issue in invasions. These farmers use an inefficient method to gain Elden Ring's currency, Runes, and often spoil the PvP experience for other players. To combat them, some veteran players have even resorted to using previously unused weapons like the Jar Cannon to reach AFK farmers in unreachable locations.
Elden Ring is currently available on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
