The new chapter seems to suggest that god blades are holy knight candidates.

There's still details missing that I'm sure will be revealed later but while on roger's crew, shanks likely figured out that joyboy/nika was key to doing whatever needs to be done at laugh tale. Shanks also probably learned about his holy knights heritage from hearing stories about god valley from the crew who was there. Roger used the one piece as a way to bait joyboy/nika to get to laugh tale but shanks figured that using his holy knights status can allow him to get access to more info and resources (I.E. The gomu gomu fruit, the true nature of the world government, etc.) that could help him find and prepare joyboy for the upcoming war against the world government. Since shanks was a kid while on roger's crew, it's likely no one knew he was on the pirate king's crew until much later in shank's life.
